Highway 401 does the work — until Durham slows it

The route is very nearly one road. Highway 401 runs along the north edge of Port Hope, and from the ramp it is a straight westbound line through Clarington, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering, across the top of Toronto and down into the airport: 114.9 km that takes roughly 72 minutes with the road to yourself.

The catch is the weekday morning. Westbound through Durham, from Oshawa into Pickering, the 401 fills with commuters and a clear 72 minutes can stretch well beyond it. The pickup time should carry that margin, and the chauffeur watches the road reports on the day and can lift off at Highway 35/115 onto the 407 when the Durham stretch is crawling. Trinity College School terms and small-town life: who flies from Port Hope

Trinity College School sets the rhythm for a good share of the town's airport traffic. Boarding students arrive from overseas at the start of term and leave at its end, parents visit mid-year, and now and then a teenager travels alone and the family wants a confirmed car and a chauffeur waiting inside arrivals rather than a taxi queue. The rest is the ordinary life of a town of roughly 17,000 with a well-kept 19th-century downtown: professionals and retirees along Walton Street and the streets above it, families heading south for March break, weekend guests of the heritage district who arrived by train and would rather leave by car. VIA Rail reaches Union Station from here — not Pearson

Port Hope has something most towns its size don't: a VIA Rail station of its own on the Toronto–Montreal line, and for a day downtown it is a genuinely good choice. Pearson is a different destination. From Union you would still be carrying the bags onto the UP Express or into a second car, and the timing has to fit the train rather than the flight. GO rail, for its part, doesn't reach Northumberland County at all.

Between Port Hope and Oshawa the 401 runs open and exposed, and a January squall off the lake can turn it white while the forecast still says flurries.
