The 404 ladder — or the 407 across the top

The toll-free line runs Highway 409 to the 401 east, then up Highway 404 with a ladder of exits — Highway 7, 16th Avenue, Major Mackenzie, Elgin Mills, and Stouffville Road for Oak Ridges — each one stepping off into a different band of the town. Midday and in the evening, this is usually the quickest road.

In the weekday crushes, the 401 across the top of Toronto is the weak link, and Highway 407 replaces it: straight across from the airport with a fraction of the volume, dropping onto the 404 or Leslie Street minutes from most Richmond Hill addresses.
