Around the lake: the QEW, honestly

There is no shortcut to Niagara — the QEW around the western end of Lake Ontario is the road, and the run has a shape to it: Highway 427 south from Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, onto the QEW through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington, over the Burlington Skyway past Hamilton, the long fruit-belt straightaway through Grimsby and Beamsville, the Garden City Skyway over the Welland Canal at St. Catharines, and finally Highway 420 down into the Falls.

Off-peak — an early-morning landing, a winter weekday — the drive runs about 80 minutes. Summer weekends and Friday afternoons are another matter: the Niagara-bound QEW routinely crawls between Hamilton and St. Catharines, which is what the top of the 80–110 minute range is for. Fallsview, Clifton Hill and beyond
