The 401 across the city — or the 407 over it

The direct line is Highway 409 out of the terminals onto Highway 401 east — express lanes across North York and Scarborough, past the Rouge Valley, and into Durham at the Westney Road and Salem Road exits. It is one of the busiest stretches of highway in North America and it behaves like it: off-peak the run is a comfortable 45 minutes, but the eastbound crawl from mid-afternoon is what the top of the 45–70 minute range is for.

The alternative is Highway 407 across the top — quiet, fast and predictable — dropping down into Ajax from the north. Any toll is inside the flat quote, never billed afterwards. Your chauffeur picks the road from live conditions on the day; on a Friday afternoon, the 407 usually wins.
