Why early flights are the easy ones — on the road

The GTA's traffic problem is a daytime problem. The weekday peaks build along the 401, the Gardiner and the QEW as the business day starts and ends — but at 4 or 5 a.m. those same corridors are clear, and the drive to Pearson runs about as fast as the distance allows. An early pickup is the most predictable ride of the week, which is a genuine consolation for the hour.

The unpredictable part is supply. At 4 a.m. you cannot stand on a curb and improvise, and you don't want to discover how a ride app's coverage looks in your neighbourhood before sunrise. What matters is that a specific chauffeur, with your name, address and pickup time, committed to the job the night before. That's the difference between pre-booked service and hoping someone is awake.

There's a small pricing bonus too: a ride to the airport is a drop-off, and airport drop-offs carry no airport fee — the $15.27 fee applies only to pickups at the airport. Your all-in quote to the terminal is the complete price.

Timing the pickup: work backwards from check-in

Your airline owns the arrival-time question — follow the check-in guidance on your booking for your flight type and treat it as a floor, not a target. From there, work backwards: check-in deadline, minus the drive at that hour, minus a margin for loading the car and the small surprises.

Book earlier than the night before

Online bookings need at least three hours of lead time, so a same-night booking for a 4:30 a.m. pickup is technically possible at 1:30 a.m. — but don't plan to live like that. Book the ride when you book the flight, or at the latest the previous afternoon, while your head is clear and the self-serve edit window is still open.

The night-before checklist

An early departure runs on preparation, not willpower. The version that works:

Note the 12-hour rule carefully with early flights: for a 5 a.m. pickup, the self-serve window closes at 5 p.m. the evening before. Inside that window, changes are a phone call rather than a link — one more reason to finalize the plan in daylight.

• Confirm the pickup time and address in your confirmation email — the self-serve link lets you view and edit the booking up to 12 hours before pickup
• Luggage packed and by the door; documents in the bag, not in the printer
• Phone charged and unmuted — your SMS reminder arrives about four hours before pickup
• Child seats needed? They're free, forward- or rear-facing, and installed before the chauffeur arrives — request them at booking, not at 4 a.m.
• Decide payment now: card, Apple Pay or Google Pay charged only once the ride is confirmed, or cash handed to the chauffeur in the morning

What the pre-dawn ride costs

The quote is a flat all-in total: base fare, gratuity, fuel where applicable, HST and any card fee, agreed before you sleep and unchanged when the alarm goes off. Because a ride to Pearson is a drop-off, there's no airport fee in it — which is why a run to the terminal quotes lower than the same route as a pickup, where the published 'from' fares (like the $134.81 sedan figure from Pearson to downtown) include the $15.27 pickup fee.
