Why do short airport limo trips cost the same as longer ones?

The pattern: one floor price across very different routes

Quote a handful of Pearson pickups and a curious pattern appears: Mississauga at 16.6 km, North York at 22.2, Vaughan at 22.8, Brampton at 23.4, Richmond Hill at 31.2, Scarborough at 33.2, Oakville at 33.4, Milton at 33.9 and Markham at 39 all return the same sedan figure — $132.91 all-in.

The extreme case makes the mechanism obvious: a Billy Bishop pickup to a downtown hotel is 2.8 km — a ride you could almost walk — and it too quotes $132.91. Nine routes spanning a 14x difference in distance, one price.

That's a minimum fare at work: a floor below which no trip is priced, however short. Every vehicle class has one — the SUV's floor sits at $194.01 — and each floor covers routes out to roughly the same distance before per-kilometre reality resumes.

Why minimum fares exist at all

A chauffeured trip carries costs that don't shrink with the route. Whatever the distance, a licensed chauffeur and a late-model vehicle are dispatched and committed to your window; on airport pickups, the $15.27 airport fee applies and your flight is tracked from wheels-up; and gratuity, the card fee and 13% HST are folded into the total. A 3 km trip consumes almost all of what a 30 km trip does — except fuel and minutes on the highway.

The floor simply prices that reality once, instead of pretending a short trip is nearly free and recovering the difference somewhere less visible.

The alternative models are familiar and worse: meters that start cheap and accumulate, or 'from' prices that quietly exclude tax, tip and fees. A published floor with everything inside is the version you can actually plan around.

Where the floor ends and distance takes over

Past roughly the 40 km mark from Pearson, fares leave the floor and start tracking kilometres. The current engine draws the curve cleanly: downtown Toronto (43.7 km) quotes from $134.81 — just $1.90 above the floor — then Pickering (49.2 km) from $149.34, Burlington (50 km) from $151.46, Newmarket (54.3 km) from $162.76, Hamilton (63.2 km) from $186.12, Oshawa (67.9 km) from $198.53, and Barrie (90.1 km) from $256.72.

Notice what's absent: jumps, zones and round-number cliffs. The fare rises smoothly with the road, because distance — not psychology — is what's being priced.

The same curve exists for every vehicle class above its own floor, which is why an SUV to Oshawa ($270.11) stands in the same proportion to its floor as the sedan does to $132.91.

What minimum fares mean when you're booking

First: if your trip is short, the floor is why your quote matches your neighbour's a suburb away — you're both inside the blanket. It also means a longer trip within the floor costs nothing extra: Markham at 39 km rides the same $132.91 as Mississauga at 16.6.

Second: comparing operators fairly means comparing final totals. A competitor's lower short-trip price that hasn't yet added tax, tip, airport fee and card processing usually isn't lower — the floor here already contains all four.
